Your securities and cash are protected by SIPC
Our broker, Alpaca Securities LLC, is a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), which protects securities customers of its members up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for claims for cash). Alpaca Securities LLC has purchased an additional insurance policy through Lloyd's of London to supplement SIPC protection known as Excess SIPC Coverage. The additional insurance becomes available to customers in the event that SIPC limits are exhausted. This additional insurance policy provides protection for securities and cash up to an aggregate of $150 million, and is limited to a combined return to any customer of $30 million in securities and $1 million in cash. Similar to SIPC protection, this additional insurance does not protect against a loss in the market value of securities.
Data handling & encryption
Our broker, Alpaca, adheres to the ISO 27001:2013 standard and undergoes annual SOC 2 Type 2 assessments against all 5 trust services criteria, Security, Confidentiality, Availability, Integrity, and Privacy.
Furthermore, Alpaca complies with GDPR and UK’s ICO Data Protection programs to ensure the privacy and security of all personal data collected and/or stored.
Achieving the SOC 2 Type 2 attestation and being independently verified, assures that Alpaca has an effective Security and Privacy program.
Sensitive information, such as your Social Security number, are encrypted before they’re stored. In addition, our app and website securely communicate with our servers using the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol with up-to-date configurations and ciphers. TLS helps ensure that anything you send to our servers remains private—including your personal and account information such as your password, bank account, and more.
Once we verify your banking credentials, we’ll never access them again. We use trusted third-party integrations to access information about your bank account, such as your account number and available balance.
